ICO Case History - Itasca, IL Public Works Facility

INTRODUCTION  

When the Fleet Manager for the Village of Itasca needed to repair the floor in their 16,0000 s/f garage/storage facility in tight time frame he turned to International Coatings for guidance. The facility is used to store their trucks, plows and heavy equipment and the floor is subjected to a lot of abuse, very heavy wear conditions, moisture and oil. He was seeking an environmentally friendly, long lasting, high performance floor that required a minimum of maintenance and he wanted it done right the first time so they wouldn’t be bothered with frequent repairs. ICO-Floor 51, International Coatings 100% solids, trowelled epoxy flooring system was exactly what he was looking for. It’s outstanding toughness, lack of odor, and single step application make it the ideal floor resurfacer in existing facilities such as this.

Discussion

Concare of Melrose Park, IL was chosen as the applicator for the job. The first step in the surface preparation was degreasing contaminated areas, followed by mechanical shot blasting to obtain a clean, abraded surface. All cracks 1/8” and greater were routed out and keyways were cut around the perimeter of all drains, trenches, metal protuberances and entryways. The floor was then primed with International Coatings 100% solids epoxy primer ICO Primer LV with rollers at an application rate of about 200-250 SF/gallon and allowed to dry tack free. Then ICO-Floor 51 was mixed and spread out on the floor using a screed box at ¼” thickness, then power-trowelled (see photo) to level the surface and back rolled with an isopropyl alcohol-moistened roller to close the surface. Sand was than broadcast onto the floor until the preselected texture was achieved. No sealer coat was needed because of ICO Floor 51’s resin rich mixture. Lastly the yellow safety striping and parking lanes were added using our high build, high wear ICO Floor Coating SY which was put down in a single coat.

Summary

The floor was finished and the garage was returned to service well within the required timeframe. The client was extremely happy with the quality and quickness of the installation and in the eleven months the floor has been in service there have been no issues.
